Allow for plans changing
If you expect to return on Sunday evening, do not buy cover that ends at the exact moment you hope to arrive. Traffic, weather or a family delay can turn a legal journey into an uninsured one once the policy expires. Check whether extending the policy is possible and do it before the end time.

Where will the car be kept?
A car left overnight at a hotel, holiday cottage, airport or different home address may need to be declared during the quotation. Take sensible security precautions and keep the keys away from doors and windows.

Longer journeys in an unfamiliar car
Find the fuel type before filling up. Locate the bonnet release, locking wheel-nut key and tyre kit. Pair a phone and set navigation before moving. If several people will share the driving, every driver needs suitable cover.

Travelling outside the UK
Do not assume a UK temporary policy includes the cover you need abroad. Check the countries, duration, level of cover, breakdown arrangements and documents required. A trip that crosses a border needs to be described accurately when arranging insurance.
