Use learner-specific cover
A provisional licence holder cannot use ordinary temporary cover intended for full licence holders. They need a policy designed for learner practice. Check whether the owner’s annual policy must remain in force alongside it.

The supervisor must qualify
GOV.UK sets rules for supervising a learner, including age and licence requirements. The supervisor must be capable of taking responsibility and must follow the same rules on mobile phones, alcohol and drugs as if driving.

Display plates and choose sensible roads
Use L plates, or D plates in Wales, that meet the requirements and can be seen clearly. Begin somewhere suited to the learner’s ability. Motorway practice has special rules and cannot simply be undertaken with any family supervisor.

Protect the owner’s car
Agree the excess and what happens after damage. Check tyres, mirrors and controls together before starting. If the learner becomes the main user or passes the test, tell the insurer because the existing learner policy may no longer provide cover.
