01
If the borrower is on your annual policy
A claim made under your policy may affect your claims record and no-claims discount, subject to any protection you bought. Protected no-claims discount does not necessarily stop the basic premium changing after an incident.
02
If the borrower has separate cover
A temporary policy is usually arranged separately for the borrower and car. A claim would normally begin under that policy. Even so, the owner’s insurer may ask to be told about accidents involving the vehicle, whether or not a claim is made against the annual policy.
03
Do not conceal an incident
Both driver and owner should follow their policy conditions. Failing to report an accident because the damage appears small can cause difficulty if another person later alleges injury or presents a larger repair bill.
04
Ask before choosing
If protecting the owner’s policy is a main reason for buying temporary cover, confirm the position with the provider. Read how excesses, recovery, uninsured loss and claims handling work rather than relying on a general description.
